Vol. 219 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Adaptation Grants for Footwear Industry.

123.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of adaptation grants, and the money involved, so far approved for footwear manufacturers; and if he is satisfied with the efforts of the industry to prepare for freer trade.

Special grants totalling £80,425 have been approved by An Foras Tionscal in thirteen cases towards adaptation in the footwear industry. Further applications are under consideration.

I am satisfied that the industry, under the guidance of its Adaptation Council, is tackling vigorously the problems involved in preparing the industry for the transition to free trade conditions. Much remains to be done, however, to make the industry as a whole viable in free trade.
