Vol. 219 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension to County Galway Home.

158.

asked the Minister for Health when it is proposed to commence work on the extension to St. Brendan's Home, Loughrea, County Galway.

Mr. O'Malley

On 11th May, 1965, my Department wrote to Galway County Council suggesting that their overall County Home bed position be examined in the light of recent trends with a view to determining a realistic bed complement for the county as a whole. In that letter it was recommended that, in addition to the 120 beds already available for such patients in one of the buildings at the Regional Sanatorium, Merlin Park, the possibility of using still more vacant accommodation there for county home purposes should also be examined.

On 6th October, 1965, the County Council submitted revised proposals in relation to the future bed complement of St. Brendan's Home but the use to be made of vacant accommodation at the Regional Sanatorium is still under consideration by the Western Health Institutions Board. I am having the position in Loughrea examined with a view to having part, at least, of the reconstruction and improvement scheme put in hands.
