Vol. 219 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Schools.

155.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the urgent need for a new national school at Newport, County Mayo; and what steps he proposes to take so as to have one provided.

It is proposed to replace the Newport Boys' National School by a new school.

The Department is at present considering the size of the school having regard to the necessity for making the best suitable arrangements for the primary education of the pupils in the Newport area.

It is hoped to have the investigations in the matter completed at an early date.

Would the Minister be prepared to carry out some temporary repair of the old school? Evidently it is not fit.

I have asked the Office of Public Works to carry out some temporary repairs and I understand that is being done. I have, in fact, sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the temporary repairs.

156.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the toilet facilities at Cashel technical school, Achill, County Mayo are inadequate owing to a limited water supply; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

This is a matter, in the first instance, for the County Mayo Vocational Education Committee, and my function is one of sanction only.

I have given the committee sanction in principle for an extension to the school and provision is being made in the planning of the extension for additional toilet accommodation and improved water supply.

When is the extension likely to be carried out, and could the Minister give an approximate date as to when the toilet facilities will be improved there?

It would be impossible for me to do that because at the moment we are awaiting the submission of the layout drawings, and there are a number of stages after that. All I can tell the Deputy is that it will not happen very quickly but I cannot tell him when it will happen.
