Vol. 219 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Personal Hygiene Lessons.

158.

asked the Minister for Education if it is his intention to arrange for elementary lessons to be given in personal hygiene to pupils in all schools controlled by the State.

Proposals which involve provision for regular instruction in hygiene for pupils of national schools are at present under consideration.

Provision for theoretical and practical instruction in hygiene is made in the secondary school syllabus for physical education, but schools which do not teach this syllabus generally cater for hygiene outside the formal school curriculum or in association with the teaching of domestic science in girls' schools.

In the case of vocational schools, there is already provision for the inclusion, in wholetime day courses, of instruction in personal hygiene.
