Vol. 219 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Atmospheric Pollution.

57.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will make regulations under section 10 of the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act to deal with the control of pollution of the atmosphere; and whether in the meanwhile any steps can be taken by local authorities to deal with atmospheric pollution caused by inadequate diffusion of industrial fumes and gases.

The drafting of regulations in regard to air pollution under section 10 of the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1962, is proceeding in my Department. I cannot say at this stage when the regulations will be made.

The emission of noxious fumes and gases from certain specialised industries, mainly chemical works, are subject to control under the Alkali, etc., Works Regulation Act, 1906, which is administered by my Department. Local authorities have no functions in these matters at present.
