Vol. 219 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Loans and Grants.

59.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is perturbed by the situation whereby local authorities must wait for payments from the Local Loans Fund before they disburse loans and supplementary housing grants, because of the failure of their treasures to grant overdrafts to avoid this waiting period; if he is aware that this must dissuade many young people from building their own houses; and what action he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 20 on 20th October last.

I have no evidence to date that the difficulties referred to by the Deputy are proving a significant deterrent to persons building their own houses. Allocations of new house grants are continuing at a very high level.
