Vol. 219 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Holdings for Migrants.

85.

asked the Minister for Lands how many holdings of land are being made available to migrants in the coming year; and where these holdings are located.

It is not possible at this stage to furnish the precise information requested. The Deputy will realise that such arrangements for migration as are in train are still tentative. Final decisions as regards migration each year are based on a number of factors, including the circumstances of the various applicants, the suitability of their lands for use in effecting rearrangement and the completion of new buildings.

Since 1st April last some 40 holdings—17 in Roscommon—have been allotted to migrants and I am hopeful that the number to be allotted for the remainder of the year will be about 110; these would be mainly in the midland and eastern counties.

Could the Minister state the amount of land that will be available to migrants from County Mayo?

As I have indicated in my reply, at this stage I cannot say with any certainty the number of these 110 cases we are hoping to migrate who will come from Mayo, but the majority of them probably will come from Mayo, since the greatest congestion exists there.

We have a Mayo Minister anyway.
