Vol. 220 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyfermot (Dublin) Amenities.

39.

Mr. Dunne

asked the Minister for Local Government what progress, if any, has been made towards the provision of swimming pools, a community centre and physical culture facilities at Ballyfermot, Dublin.

The provision of swimming facilities in the Dublin area, including a pool at Ballyfermot, is still under examination. Regarding a community centre and culture facilities, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to the question on 9th June last; no firm proposals have been made to the corporation in the matter as yet.

Apart from the fact that without superhuman hearing, one could hardly catch what the Minister said, will he tell me if he is aware that this scheme at Ballyfermot is almost 20 years old—some of the houses were built almost 20 years ago —and that this matter of the provision of a swimming pool and other essential facilities has been stated in this House and elsewhere to be under consideration for God knows how long? In view of the fact that this area has a vast population—it is the largest populated area in the country and it has been stated that it is bigger than the city of Waterford—does he think it is good enough that it should be left without what are regarded in civilised communities as essential minimal services?

I entirely agree.

When will we reach finality?

I entirely agree with those views.

What is the Minister going to do about it?

That is not what the Deputy was asking.

I am asking the Minister now what is he going to do about it.

We will continue the consideration to its conclusion.

The Minister's colleagues on the corporation have a responsibility as well.

This is the first time that any real concrete proposal came before any Government after all the years the Deputy was talking about.

It does not reflect much credit on the Minister's colleagues in the corporation.

Belonging to neither, it is very easy to criticise.

Do not vex Deputy Moore.
