Vol. 220 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Direct Dialling System.

59.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the present extent of the direct dialling system; what plans he has for its extension, in particular to places outside the State; and when such extension will come into operation.

Direct dialling is now available to some 75 per cent of subscribers and is being extended to the remainder according as manual exchanges are converted to automatic working. The provision of direct dialling to other countries must await establishment of a new high capacity telephone link with Britain, which is at present being planned and will take three or four years to complete.
