Vol. 220 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disability Benefit Appeal.

33.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether a decision has yet been reached in the appeal in connection with disability benefit of a person (name supplied); and, if so, what decision.

A decision in this case was deferred pending further examination by a specialist. It is expected that the appeal will be decided at an early date.

Will this poor man have to suffer in 1966 what he suffered in 1965? Will he be nine months waiting for a decision on his case? It is a disgrace.

This man has been examined on seven occasions by five different medical referees and he was found capable of working on each occasion. In addition, he was examined by a specialist who certified that he was an exceptionally fit man for his age. Now attempts are being made to have him examined by another specialist but he refuses to submit himself for examination.

He has been asked to travel to Dublin. Can the Minister arrange to have him examined locally?

He was asked to go to Cork or Dublin and he has refused.

He is about 60 years of age.

Was he declared fit for work by the specialist?

He was declared to be an exceptionally fit man for his age and lack of activity but it was indicated that due to his prolonged inactivity, a course of rehabilitation would be desirable.

Like the Government.

(Interruptions.)

He will never be able to work unless he gets out of bed.
