Vol. 221 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Flats.

44.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Local Government whether Dublin Corporation intend to build 11 storey flats with lifts installed; and if it is now intended to exceed the present five storey limit.

The Ballymun housing project includes seven 15-storey and 17 eight-storey flat blocks with lifts in both cases.

I understand that, apart from this project, Dublin Corporation have no proposals at present involving flat blocks of more than five storeys.

Mr. O'Leary

Would it be possible to get Dublin Corporation to build higher flats in the centre of the city? Some of their schemes could be built to higher levels than at present.

It is, of course, a matter of opinion. The question of higherlevel flats and buildings in the centre or on the perimeter of the city is a matter which is being considered generally from the point of view of the future. As I say, it is a matter of opinion whether or not levels should or should not be raised.

Could the Minister tell us why he has his own name displayed on a big poster so prominently up in Ballymun?

That seems to be a separate question.

As a matter of fact, now that the Deputy has raised it, I have not seen it. Neither did I authorise it.

Will the Minister have it taken down?

Why should I?

It is offensive and dangerous to traffic. People are liable to lose their tempers when they see it.

It is not the name the Deputy is complaining against. It is the sign, is it?

Yes. Any advertising of that kind at the cost of the taxpayer is undesirable.

Was the board put up by the State?

By some friends of the Minister's obviously.

Oh, my friends. I did not know I had friends.

I did not think the Minister had any left.
