asked the Minister for Defence (a) the number of the Naval Establishment in the country, (b) the number at sea, and (c) the number of civil servants and clerks employed in the Establishment.

The peace establishments for the Naval Service provide for a total of 531 officers and men. The number at present serving is 304 of whom 67 are engaged in seagoing service. There are five clerks on the civilian establishment at the naval base at Haulbowline and two members of the civil service staff of the Department of Defence are engaged at Haulbowline on duties relating to the Naval Service.

asked the Minister for Defence the area of sea to be patrolled by the Naval Service.

As the Deputy was informed in reply to his question No. 27 of 15th December, 1964, the total area of the waters included in the 12 mile fishery limits provided for in the Maritime Jurisdiction (Amendment) Act, 1964, is 15,136 square miles.

To be serviced by one corvette?

Yes. That is the position we find ourselves in.
