Vol. 221 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unsolved Murders.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of unsolved murders at present being investigated by the Garda Síochána; and the number of unsolved murders which occurred in each of the past five years, and in 1966 to date.

In the past 20 years, there have been seven murders in which the Gardaí are not in a position, so far, to bring criminal proceedings although in two of the seven, they are virtually certain of the identity of those concerned.

Two of these unsolved murders were committed in 1961, one in 1962, none in 1963, 1964 or 1965 and one in 1966.

All unsolved murders, no matter when committed, continue to be investigated by the Gardaí but only one case—that committed in February, 1966—is now the subject of large-scale, intensive investigation.
