Vol. 221 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Attendance Act.

73.

asked the Minister for Education when he intends to introduce legislation to amend the School Attendance Act, 1926.

I hope to be in a position to introduce proposals to amend the School Attendance Act, 1926 in the course of the present session.

Is the Minister aware that as long ago as last March a deputation was received by officers of his Department and they were promised that, as this legislation was of a non-controversial nature, it would be implemented, at the latest, by July? Is he further aware that in the absence of this legislation the work of school attendance officers is being seriously impeded——

This is clearly a speech.

——and their work is ineffective?

I am not aware of the implication in the first part of the Deputy's question. In regard to the second part, it is clear I am aware of the deficiencies when I say I propose to introduce amending legislation.

In the course of the present session.
