Vol. 221 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Expenditure.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the components of the £21.84 million for housing purposes mentioned on page 11 of the Capital Budget, 1966 in respect of (a) local authority houses, (b) other public authority houses, (c) grants for private houses, (d) loans, and (e) other expenditure, and the number of houses affected by the expenditure at (a) to (e).

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state for (a) 1965-66 and (b) 1966-67 the estimated output of new houses and the estimated outlay in the following classifications: (1) local authority houses, (2) houses financed by SDA loans, (3) houses financed from other public sources, (4) houses financed from building societies and banking systems, and (5) total houses.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 13 and 14 together, and, as the reply contains tabular statements, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the reply:

Estimates, so far as they are available, of the outlay under the individual headings mentioned in Question No. 14 are given in the following table which sets out the components of the £21.84 million in the Capital Budget for 1966-67, with comparative figures for the 1965-66 Budget provision:

On the basis of information available for the period up to 31st December, 1965, it was estimated by the Department of Finance in consultation with my Department, that the output of houses in 1965-66 and 1966-67 would be of the order of 22,200 made up as follows:—

Notes:

Expenditure on housing in a particular year does not relate to the number of houses built in that year.

In addition to the figures given in Table 1, a sum of the order of £.7 million is included in both the 1965-66 and 1966-67 estimates for housing services provided by the Land Commission and the Shannon Free Airport Development Company. The output figures at Table 2 include houses built with aid from these agencies. Some of the houses included at (c) of that Table would also qualify for house purchase loans from local authorities. The resulting duplication would, however, not be significant.

In regard to item (d) of Table 2, returns made to my Department by the principal building societies and assurance companies earlier this year indicate that they expect to advance about £11.5 million for housing loans in 1966 as against approximately £11.3 million in 1965.
