Vol. 221 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Subsidy.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it will be a condition precedent to obtaining a housing subsidy that Irish materials be used after 1st July, 1966, when free trade is introduced.

The existing conditions in regard to the use, as far as possible, of materials and appliances of Irish manufacture in State subsidised housing operations will continue in force after the 1st July next. These conditions will, however, be subject to review in the light of Article XIV (2) of the Free Trade Area Agreement which provides that the Government of Ireland shall ensure the progressive elimination by 1st July, 1975, of any practice which would involve specified forms of trade discrimination on the grounds of nationality.

They will only have to supply nine-tenths Irish material.
