Vol. 221 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing of County Dublin Family.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that as a direct result of an executive order TP/475/63, dated 31st March, 1963, members of a family residing in overcrowded conditions in vested cottage V 2829 are now obliged to reside in a caravan on their cottage plot because it is alleged that the cottage plot is too close to a mink farm; and if he will take steps to remedy the injustice and hardship which is being caused by the decisions of officials.

I understand that, in giving planning permission for the establishment of a mink farm at Feltrim, Swords, Dublin County Council, on the recommendation of the county medical officer, imposed a condition that the farm be sited at a distance not less than 400 feet from the nearest dwelling in order to minimise nuisance to the inhabitants of the district. As a result of experience gained from the operation of the mink farm during the past three years, the county medical officer has recently expressed the opinion that no dwelling-house should be built within a considerably greater distance of the farm. For this reason the council are not prepared to consider any proposal to build a second dwelling on the plot of vested cottage No. V 2629, as it is located approximately 400 feet from the central building of the mink farm.

The county council state that the application by the family concerned for housing accommodation has been noted by them for consideration in connection with the allocation of the tenancies of cottages to be built or of any cottages which may fall vacant, in the district.
