Vol. 221 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parking Facilities in Dublin Housing Scheme.

21.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that Dublin Corporation forbid the parking of cars by tenants in St. Brigid's Gardens; whether he is aware that there are no facilities for car parking in the environs of St. Brigid's Gardens; and whether any facilities can be provided for the tenants.

I understand that in accordance with normal practice, the longterm parking of cars is forbidden by Dublin Corporation in the open area which was provided as play space and for clothes drying in the St. Brigid's Gardens scheme.

The question of whether car parking facilities should be provided for their tenants is a matter for consideration by the Corporation in the first instance. I understand, however, that it is not possible to provide such facilities in the immediate area of the St. Brigid's Gardens flats, but that, subject to compliance with normal traffic byelaws, cars may be parked in the nearby streets at any time of day or night.

Mr. O'Leary

There is, in fact, a vacant lot next to these flats which is not being used for any purpose. People who work and who leave their cars in adjoining streets find the cars broken into. I have previously referred to the serious traffic problems in the area.

Surely the provision of a car park, if it is not completely enclosed and locked up, would not prevent cars being broken into?

Mr. O'Leary

Anything would be an improvement.
