asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount of any increases made in the customs or excise duties respectively on tobacco, beer and whiskey since 1st January, 1957, calculated per 20 cigarettes of the normal type, per 20 cigarettes of the normal filter-tip type, per pint of beer and per glass of whiskey respectively; and the price of each such article on 1st January, 1957 and each succeeding 1st January, and the current price.

The answer is in the form of tabular statements and I propose, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

The information officially available in respect of filter-tip cigarettes prior to April, 1962 is not such as would permit reliable information to be furnished for the period prior to that date. The figures given are the approximate duty contents for a representatives cross-section of popular brands.

The figures given above are exclusive of turnover tax and, in the case of imported spirits, of special import levy.

(a) The information available in respect of filter-tip cigarettes prior to April, 1962 is not such as would permit reliable information to be furnished for the period prior to that date.

(b) The prices given for a pint of beer and a glass of whiskey are Dublin prices. Prices for these commodities vary throughout the country.

(c) Prices of special brands are 2d. to 4d. higher.

(d) Particulars of retail prices of cigarettes following the Budget increases are not yet available.
