Vol. 221 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leinster House Building.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance the methods used to place contracts for the manufacture and supply of furniture and office fittings for the new wing in Leinster House; the number and names of firms invited to tender; and if he is aware of widespread indignation in the furniture trade that a number of reputable firms were not invited to tender.

No contract has yet been placed for the supply of furniture for the new extension to Leinster House. The built-in fittings were provided under the main building contract.

A substantial proportion of the furniture which will be needed will be supplied from existing stocks. For a number of rooms, including those which will be occupied by An Taoiseach and other Ministers, the Ceann Comhairle, Parliamentary Secretaries and Leaders of the Opposition it is Proposed to purchase new furniture and a consultant was commissioned to design it.

Tenders for the bulk of the new furniture were invited by means of public advertisement. On the consultant's recommendation tenders were sought from five firms for the remaining items, which constitute only a relatively small part of the requirements. It would not, I consider, be in the interests of other furniture manufacturers to publicise the names of the five firms concerned.

I am not aware of any widespread indignation in the furniture trade in regard to this matter.
