Vol. 222 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dumping of Cars in Dublin.

3.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the increasing nuisance being caused by the dumping of cars in public places in Dublin city and county, and of the unsightliness, obstruction and danger of accidents arising therefrom; and whether he will introduce legislation prohibiting such dumping.

Under existing law a person is prohibited from leaving a vehicle in a public place so as to cause danger or obstruction. No useful purpose would be served by making additional prohibitions. I consider that the most effective way to deal with the problem in question is to strengthen the powers of the appropriate authorities to remove abandoned vehicles and this, as already announced, will be dealt with in forthcoming legislation.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that on a main street in Dublin and on some of the roads between Dublin and Inchicore and Dublin and Chapelizod old cars are dumped? They are a hazard to children and to traffic and some of them have been there for five or six months. I see them on the main roads from Dublin and on many of our streets. Somebody is neglecting his duty.

As I said in the reply, it is proposed to strengthen the powers of the appropriate authorities in forthcoming legislation.

Have the authorities not got adequate powers at present to deal with the situation and make people remove these old cars from the public streets and highways?

They have some powers but those they have at the moment are not strong enough and the Minister is trying to deal with that.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary seen an abandoned car on the road from Dublin to Bray at Montrose for months past. Surely it struck him that there should be some legislative machinery whereby this old car can be removed? Has the Parliamentary Secretary seen that car?

The Parliamentary Secretary should look at it. Of course he is at an advantage as he is not even driving.

He need not keep his eye on the road.
