Vol. 222 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Import Levies.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount collected in special import levies to 31st March, 1966.

The yield of Special Import Levy up to 31st March, 1966 was £704,000 approximately.

Can the Minister inform the House if the levy is fulfilling its purpose? Can he give an indication, now that the British Government have announced that their import duties will be removed from November next, when ours will be removed?

When the current extension of the period has elapsed, consideration will be given to their removal.

When does the current one end?

The end of June.

Is any discretion ever used in the imposition of this special import levy or is the Minister aware that it is causing hospitals and other similar institutions in the State considerable extra expense?

I am having these matters examined.

That is a separate question.
