Vol. 223 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bank Dispute.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the difficulties caused to the general public by reason of the closing down of the banks of the country; and if he will take steps to hold an immediate public inquiry into the position with a view to having the differences resolved between the directors and the staff.

The present situation has arisen as a result of a dispute between the banks and their employees. As I explained in reply to recent questions, the constitution of the Irish Banks' Joint Industrial Council sets out agreed procedures for resolving such disputes. The Deputy will be aware that certain negotiations are in progress: these should be let run their course.

Is there any suggestion of the introduction of legislation to fine these people on strike when they refuse to work?

The legislation is designed to protect the supply of electricity to the community.

To protect money; it is a threat to the supply of money.

There is no real threat to the supply of money.

(Cavan): The source has been dried up.

Would the Minister say where he cashes his monthly cheque?

There is a great difference between not being able to cash your cheque and not having electricity to work a machine where a man works.

(Interruptions.)

Where does the Minister cash his cheque?
