Vol. 223 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na gCon.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount paid to the Chairman of Bord na gCon in respect of salary and expenses since 1st April, 1964, and the payments made to each member of the Board in respect of salary and expenses.

The amount paid to the Chairmen of Bord na gCon for salary in the period 1st April, 1964, to 31st May, 1966, was £7,340. The remuneration paid to each member of the Board in the same period was £716 13s 4d.

The information sought in regard to expenses is not available to me. My function in the matter is to fix, with the consent of the Minister for Finance, the rates at which expenses may be paid by the Board to the Chairman and members. I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report particulars of the rates fixed.

Following are the particulars:

Rates of expenses payable to the Chairman and Members of Bord na gCon in connection with the business of the Board.

(a) Subsistence expenses at the following rates: 53s 9d a night (24 hours), 17s 11d day allowance (10 hours or more), and 8s 6d for absences of more than 7 hours but less than 10 hours;

(b) Travelling expenses at rates varying between 10d and 1s per mile according to the horse power of car, for the first 9,000 miles travelled in a year, and between 5¼d and 7¼d per mile for mileage in excess of 9,000 in the year;

(c) Entertainment expenses—refund of the actual amounts involved.

Did the Minister say the Chairman of Bord na gCon got over £7,000? Am I hearing correctly?

The Deputy is not.

Will the Minister repeat the first paragraph?

I gave the amount paid to the Chairmen.

That was to Dr. Maguire and the present Chairman. How much?

Between the two of them, over the three year period the amount was £7,340.

What was the £7,000 for?

Salaries as full-time Chairmen of Bord na gCon.

£7,000 since 1964?

The rate of salary is £3,360 per annum which is a great deal less than a number of comparable organisations pay.

Mr. O'Malley

And the exports of greyhounds were up.

I would not agree that the job is worth £3,000.

(Interruptions.)
