Vol. 223 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial School System.

20.

asked the Minister for Justice if his Department received in February, 1963 a report from a public health nurse who was an acting children's officer regarding the problems of the deprived child and the young offender, making suggestions as to the improvement of the industrial school system; and what action, if any, has been taken since along the lines suggested in this report.

Views of the person in question in relation to the problems of the deprived child and the necessity for changes in the system of institutional care were communicated to the Chairman of an inter-departmental committee established by my predecessor for the purpose of enquiring into the existing methods for the prevention of crime and the treatment of offenders.

The problems of the deprived child and the question of changes in the existing system of institutional care were considered by the committee as not coming within its terms of reference and the scope of its inquiries.
