Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Examination Failures in Irish.

46.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the last three years the numbers and percentages of the total numbers of candidates in (1) the intermediate certificate and (2) the leaving certificate who failed solely on account of failure to reach the requisite standard in Irish.

The figures for the intermediate certificate are 1963-83, 1964—115 and 1965-82. These numbers represented respectively .5, .6, .4 of one per cent of the total number of candidates.

The corresponding figures for the leaving certificate were 97, 75, 248 and the corresponding percentages 1 per cent, .7 of 1 per cent and 2.1 per cent.

As a result of the supplementary examination held in the autumn of 1965, the figure for that year was reduced to 189 and the percentage to 1.6.
