Vol. 224 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Mileages.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total mileage of roads in the country, giving the mileage of (a) main roads and (b) county roads; if he will state (c) the mileage tarred, (d) the mileage yet to be tarred and (e) when it is envisaged that all roads main and county will be tarred.

At 31st March, 1965, the latest date for which complete figures are available, there were 52,643 miles of public roads maintainable by road authorities in the country, including (a) 9,879 miles of main roads and (b) 41,594 miles of county roads. With regard to (c) of the Deputy's question, 37,600 miles had been provided with dust-free surfaces and 15,043 miles had not. As to (e) of the question, I am not in a position to indicate when dust-free surfaces will have been provided on all main and county roads in the country.
