Vol. 224 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Millstreet (Cork) Speed Limit.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals before his Department for the imposition of a speed limit in Millstreet, County Cork.

The desirability of applying a speed limit to the village in question will be considered during the review of speed limits at present being carried out by my Department.

Could the Minister say when this review will take place?

It is taking place. We just have not got to that one yet.

Is the Minister not aware that repeatedly during the past two years we have asked from Cork County Council for a decision on this and many other towns?

I am not suggesting the Deputy has not sought this. On the other hand, neither am I aware of it to the degree the Deputy implies. Again, I want to indicate that the overall review of the original sign placings is taking place continuously and without any break and that it is a very big and expensive job. We hope that when this total review has been made and the signs are re-sited or new signs put up, as may be appropriate, the job will be, by and large, satisfactory and as near finished as one could expect it to be.

Could the Minister give any good reason why the improved arrangements are not put into operation? The review has been going on for several years and there must be some areas that have already been reviewed.

It is years since we began talking about them. We are putting them into operation county by county.

The Minister will recall that six months ago he gave me a reply to the effect that it was not proposed to put the others into operation until the entire job was completed.

I do not remember the question.

The Minister might look at the reply.

If the Deputy tells me that it was he who gave me the thought that was responsible for making this work out so well, he is welcome to the credit.
