In the period since the Charolais bulls were first imported in 1963 up to 30th June last they provided for 11,878 services through artificial insemination stations. The present rate of usage is about 2 per cent of all the beef breed inseminations.
Comprehensive trials are in progress in association with An Foras Talúntais to determine the value of the Charolais as a beef crossing sire. Future policy in relation to the breed will be influenced by the results of these trials which will require at least two more years to complete.
Is the Minister satisfied that sufficient effort has been made up to the present time to promote the use of this breed? Has he seen the report of the British Meat Marketing Board on the advantages to be gained from the use of Charolais bulls?
I have seen the report by, I think, Dr. Edwards, who has made certain claims. This is a question for experts. Decisions can only be come to after very careful examination of results over a period. I do not think we are at that stage yet.
Does the Minister not think he is moving too carefully?
That is a matter of opinion.
Has the Minister explored the British cattle market in regard to this, and if so, has he any information on it?
