asked the Minister for Finance what percentage (a) of the national income, and (b) of the gross national product is the annual yield of taxation by Central Government, including social security contributions of employers and employed.

For the calendar year 1965, the national income is estimated at £813 million and the gross national product at £1,015 million. The total net amount collected by the State in tax revenue, motor vehicle duties and social insurance contributions by employers and employees in the financial year ended 31 March 1966 was £220 million. This represents 27.02 per cent of the national income and 21.64 per cent of the gross national product in the year 1965.
