Vol. 224 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reformatory and Industrial Schools.

39.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider the implementation of a recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry into the Reformatory and Industrial Schools System made in 1936 which urged that the titles Reformatory School and Industrial School should be abolished and the alternative terms National Boarding School and Approved School used for legislative and administrative purposes.

I am sympathetic to the recommendation for the discontinuance of the descriptions "Reformatory" and "Industrial" applied to these schools. The difficulty is to find suitable alternative terms which will not in the course of time acquire a similar colour. A change of title would require amending legislation. I am prepared to consider the matter favourably the next time such amending legislation is proposed.
