Vol. 224 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Civics Courses.

40.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made in the introduction of civics in the schools; what literature is available on the subject; and if the literature will be available for general sale to the public.

A syllabus in civics forms part of the revised intermediate certificate course for pupils in secondary, vocational and comprehensive schools introduced in the current school-year. In preparation for the introduction of this syllabus, a course in methods of teaching civics was held in Dublin last summer and was attended by 500 teachers. I hope to have arrangements made soon for further such courses.

Negotiations are still proceeding with the interested parties regarding the introduction of civics into the primary school programme.

Civics is a subject covering an extensive field and a great deal of literature on history, current affairs and political and cultural institutions would be relevant to the study and the teaching of it. A handbook for teachers on the teaching of the subject is in preparation at present and will be published in due course.
