Mr. Corish

asked the Taoiseach the proportion of Irish (i) imports and (ii) exports carried in Irish registered ships (a) in the cross-Channel trade with Britain; and (b) in other trades in each of the years 1956 to 1965 inclusive.

The Taoiseach

The only relevant information available relates to the number of vessels which entered and cleared Irish ports from and to ports in the categories of countries mentioned and the net registered tonnage of such vessels. The following table gives this information in respect of the ships which entered and cleared Irish ports with cargo in the years 1958-61, 1964 and 1965. It is not possible to compile such information for years earlier than 1958 or for 1962 and 1963 as the basic data are no longer available in a form suitable for processing.

Number and net tonnage of (a) Irish ships and (b) ships of other nationalities which entered or cleared at Irish Ports with cargoes from and to (i) Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Channel Islands (ii) other countries in the years 1958-60.
