Vol. 225 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Festival Grants.

8.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will list the festivals partly financed by grants from Bord Fáilte; and what criteria were followed in the allocation of such grants.

I am informed by Bord Fáilte that the festivals to which they give financial aid are:—

Cork Choral and Film Festivals.

Dublin Theatre Festival.

Dundalk Festival.

Kerry Festival.

Kilkenny Beer Festival.

Waterford Festival of Light Opera.

Westport International Sea Angling Festival.

Wexford Festival.

There are four main criteria used by Bord Fáilte in the allocation of these grants:—

(1) the number of visitors from outside the State which the festival of itself is capable, or potentially capable, of attracting;

(2) The volume of publicity which the festival can generate outside the State;

(3) the amount of local support;

(4) the internal public relations value for tourism of the event.

Could the Minister give us the amount paid to each particular festival?

I have not got that. The total amount is £34,000.

Is it proposed to subsidise publicly the public contest for the office of Taoiseach—the public competition that is going on, public entertainment?

A free grant for tomahawks would cover that situation.

The Deputy's remark is beneath contempt.

Oh, the Minister is a candidate himself, is he? I am sorry.
