Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Acreage and Imports.

1.

asked the Taoiseach (a) the acreage of wheat sown in (i) 1954 and (ii) 1965 and (b) the amount of wheat imported in 1965.

The area of wheat in the State in 1954 was 486,368 acres. The corresponding figure for 1965 was 182,170 acres. The total quantity of wheat imported in 1965 was 323,326 tons.

In view of the fact that the acreage has fallen by over 300,000 in the past ten years, could the Taoiseach tell us if the Government have any policy at present to increase wheat production?

That is a separate question.

The Deputy has a question to the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries on that subject.

There has been a catastrophic drop in wheat production. It is certainly time the Government took action.
