Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Educational Standards.

138.

asked the Minister for Education what changes, if any, he considers are necessary in order to bring this country's educational standards into line with those laid down in the Treaty of Rome.

The Treaty of Rome does not lay down educational standards to which States acceding to the Treaty must conform. Ireland's accession to the Treaty would not, of itself, call for any review of educational standards here.

I may add that I am satisfied that, in relation to educational standards and the measures being taken to improve them, Ireland does not compare unfavourably with European countries generally.
