Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Insurance Industry.

146.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce to what extent the Irish insurance industry will have the statutory advantages which it at present enjoys curtailed in the event of the country's joining the EEC; and if steps will be taken to ensure adequate transitional measures to permit the industry to adjust without loss or disruption of business.

The EEC has not yet issued the main directives for the implementation of the Rome Treaty on the right of establishment in so far as the insurance sector is concerned. The extent to which certain aspects of our legislation may be incompatible with the provisions of the Treaty and the implementing regulations and the transitional arrangements for the elimination of any incompatibility are matters for clarification and negotiation at the appropriate stage.
