Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foreign Investment in Distributive Trade.

149.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the increase in foreign investment in the distributive trade in this country is forcing many independent traders out of business; if so, whether he proposes to take any steps to control this development; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no evidence that the position is as stated in the first part of the question and the second part does not, therefore, arise. I have already stated publicly that developments will be watched and that the Government will have regard to any risks of monopolisation.
