Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

6.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the up-to-date position regarding this country's application for membership of the EEC, in view of the fact that the British Government are pressing ahead for entry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

7.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Taoiseach whether it is the intention of the Government to seek representation at the meeting of EFTA countries to be held in London in the near future, where discussions will take place on initiative by EFTA countries to join the EEC.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 6 and 7 together.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by my predecessor to a question on the 26th October which indicated the position at that time. Since that date the British Prime Minister has, as the House is aware, made an important announcement on British intentions in relation to the European Economic Community. The British Government have kept in touch with us about these developments, and I propose to seek a meeting with Mr. Wilson to discuss this and other matters of interest to our two countries.
