Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Postmen.

33.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction in County Galway arising out of the method of appointment of postmen; and if he will take the necessary steps to ensure that men who have given honest and faithful service as temporary postmen will be given first preference when permanent appointments are being made.

I am not aware of widespread dissatisfaction in County Galway arising out of the method of appointment of postmen. The claims and qualifications of serving temporary men are invariably considered when quasi-permanent appointments are being made. Appointments as permanent postmen are made from competitions conducted by the Civil Service Commissioners and temporary postmen are given opportunities from time to time to compete for such posts.

I should like to remind the Parliamentary Secretary that temporary postmen may be given an opportunity of competing but in one case in East Galway, Party politics ruled the roost and it was an appointee of the Minister who got the job.
