Vol. 225 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Export Subsidy.

35.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what changes in subsidy on beef or cattle in this country or in Britain are to take place at the end of this month; and what effect this will have on the cattle trade.

No change in the beef export subsidy here will take place at the end of this month apart from the normal weekly change in the rate of subsidy which is based on the rate of guarantee payment in Britain under the Fatstock Guarantee Scheme in operation there. As regards cattle, it was announced on 21st October that the special temporary arrangement for headage payments on fat cattle exported to Britain, which had been introduced in August, would not be continued after November. By that time the back-log of finished cattle here should have been substantially cleared and we will be entering the period when a seasonal upturn in the market usually takes place.

I am not aware of any change due to take place at the end of this month in the subsidy in Britain on cattle and beef, other than the normal weekly change in the standard price and rate of guarantee payment under the Fatstock Guarantee Scheme.
