Vol. 225 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pension Increase.

22.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will review the position regarding the recent non-contributory old age pension increase and grant the increase of 5/- weekly to all pensioners.

Increases are being paid in accordance with legislation passed by the Oireachtas. I do not propose to introduce further legislation at this stage.

23.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of old age pensioners in County Mayo who have benefited from the recent 5/-increase.

Mr. Brennan

Statistics of pensioners who received the 5/- increase have not been compiled in respect of each county.

That would not do.

The Minister can easily divide £10 by 26 and get an average.

Mr. O'Malley

It is better than 2/6d in three years anyway.

Do not say you are going to promise something for the old age pensioners. Stick to your farmers.

What the Minister said is completely wrong. It was 10/-.

The Minister for Education is too young to know.

What they are getting today is worth 10/- only.

Please allow the Minister to proceed. Question No. 24.
