Vol. 226 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - TV Drink Advertising.

28.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his attention has been directed to the over-emphasis on the advertising of alcoholic drink on Telefís Éireann; if it is proposed to continue large scale advertising of such drinks on television particularly before 9.30 p.m. each night; and if he will consult with the Authority on this matter having regard to the comments which have been made on the matter by Church leaders.

My only function in regard to advertising on Radio Telefís Éireann is under section 20, subsection (3) of the Broadcasting Authority Act, 1960. The total daily time fixed by the Authority for broadcasting advertisements, and the distribution, determined by the Authority, of that time throughout the programme is subject to the approval of the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs.

Radio Telefís Éireann have published a code of standards to which advertisements must conform before they will be accepted for transmission.

I am aware that advertising trends are kept under review by the Authority, and I feel sure that, in considering this or any other aspect of advertising, the Authority will take all relevant factors into account.

Might I ask if the Parliamentary Secretary would be good enough to direct the Authority's attention to recent statements by the Bishop of Limerick and by Father Simon O'Byrne in reference to this type of advertising?

I have no doubt the Authority are fully conversant with these comments and that there is no necessity for me to draw their attention to them.
