Vol. 226 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kenmare Bay Fishing Rights.

20.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that the granting of fishing rights to a company (name supplied) from Ardea Castle to Rossmore Island and Kenmare Bridge in Kenmare Bay, County Kerry, will mean a loss of livelihood to the hundred small fishermen and farmers who fish there; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An application for an oyster fishery order in respect of an area of Kenmare Bay was the subject of a public inquiry held at Kenmare on 11th January, 1967. The inquiry was adjourned and will be resumed on 15th February, that is, today. I will bear the Deputy's representations in mind in considering the report of the inquiry.

The name of the party concerned, by some misunderstanding, was not inserted. It is Prescott Shell Fisheries of Ireland, Limited. The closure of the fisheries would cause great hardship. I hope the Minister will bear that in mind because there are many young people who have returned from England who are making a livelihood there.

This is an argument, not a question.

I am merely asking the Minister will he bear it in mind.

I certainly shall, yes.
