Vol. 226 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Licensed Trade Deputation.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he has received a request from the licensed trade that he and the Minister for Justice receive a deputation to discuss urgent problems concerning the future of the trade; and if he will meet this deputation at the earliest possible date.

A request has been received from the Irish National Vintners Federation for the reception of a deputation in connection with certain matters affecting the licensed trade, the chief subject for discussion to be an outline scheme, prepared a considerable time ago by the Federation for a reduction in the number of licensed premises in the country.

The Federation have been informed more than once by the Minister for Justice that he does not consider that the proposals put forward constitute the basis for a workable scheme. Furthermore, the Minister has stated that he cannot see how any scheme could be devised which would appreciably reduce the number of licensed premises in the foreseeable future, would satisfy the licensed trade and would not conflict with the public interest.

The Federation have been told, however, that if they submit a detailed scheme it will be carefully considered. I do not see that any useful purpose would be served by the reception of a deputation, at least until a detailed scheme has been examined.

Can the Taoiseach give an assurance that, if they have very definite proposals worthy of meritorious consideration, he will be prepared to receive them, in view of the fact that the licensed trade is a very important section of our business and commercial life?

I am prepared to say that any reasonable scheme submitted will get close and detailed examination.

And the Taoiseach would be prepared, with the Minister for Justice, to discuss the matter with them?

It is a matter, in the first instance, for the Minister for Justice.

Seemingly they display great confidence in the Taoiseach, in addition to the Minister for Justice.
