Vol. 226 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Rents Revision.

27.

andMr. Larkin asked the Minister for Local Government if his attention has been directed to a decision made by the Dublin City Council on the 6th February, 1967 on the City Manager's proposals regarding rents revision; and if he will now allay the tenants' anxiety by conforming with the decision made by the Dublin City Council that there should be no rent increase.

I am aware of the resolution to which the Deputies refer. I received proposals relating to the review of rents from the corporation on the 8th instant and am currently examining the matter in detail. I am not in a position at this stage to comment on the proposals.

Is the Minister aware that the proposals which the City Manager submitted to the corporation have been rejected unanimously? The situation is that the City Manager, we presume with Ministerial approval, has imposed rents that are in excess of 200 per cent of the economic value of the houses? Would the Minister indicate whether, having regard to the unanimous expression of view of the local authority, including members of his own Party, it is his intention to withdraw the circular issued to local authorities in March of last year?

I have the proposals from the corporation and I am studying them now.

I hope the Minister will remember his voters in Ballyfermot.

There will be no decision until after June.

If he does not remember, he will be reminded about them.

I am glad Deputy Dunne knows whom they vote for.

When does the Minister expect he will be in a position to make a decision about this?

It will take me some time to examine it.

What is meant by "some time"?

I shall ensure that the intention of the Opposition Parties to keep this going until after the local elections will not be fulfilled. It will be before that.

The Minister should be mindful of the fact that members of his own Party expressed anxiety about this matter.

Would the Minister indicate whether he will consult Deputies Dowling, Burke and others who are in the local authority and who voted in favour of this resolution?

It shows you what a a democratic Party we are.

It shows there are local elections pending.

I know as much about this as Deputy Larkin knows. I do not have to consult anyone.
