Vol. 226 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Future of Clonsast Bog.

8.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the future of Clonsast Bog, Portarlington, County Offaly; if any estimate can be given as to the life or duration of this dog; the likely prospect for increased employment and if he will make a general statement in regard to this matter.

Bord na Móna estimate that the group of bogs known as Clonsast will continue in turf production for a further 33 years. The present level of production should continue until about 1980; therefore production levels will reduce and fuel production operations should cease about the year 2000.

I am informed that there is no prospect for increased employment above the average level of recent years. This average of 450 men a week is expected to be maintained in the years immediately ahead.
