Vol. 226 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sick Pay Scheme for Forestry Workers.

46.

asked the Minister for Lands when it is proposed to introduce a sick-pay scheme for forestry workers.

This question is at present being examined in consultation with other Departments concerned and I hope it will be possible to reach a decision on the matter shortly.

Surely the Minister is aware that he gave us an interim reply to the same type of question almost 12 months ago? Can he now tell us why no appreciable progress has been made towards the introduction of this very desirable scheme for forestry workers?

For the same reason as has been given before and yesterday in this House. There are many other categories involved in this matter, besides forestry workers. It is proposed to go into all those categories together.

You are becoming senile.

When the Minister says a decision will be reached shortly, how soon will that be?

As soon as possible.

Will it be months or weeks?

As other Departments are involved, I can only answer for my own Department.

Will it be this year?

I expect it will.

Will the Minister not consider giving a lead to the other Departments in this matter? Why has he not given a lead to the other Departments?

This matter cannot be done is isolation, as has been stated both by myself and my colleagues. The same regulations will have to apply to all categories.
