Vol. 226 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Walkinstown (Dublin) Improvements.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the fact that Dublin County Council have not carried out the road improvement works approved for Walkinstown Cross nine years ago, the council are taking steps to provide a roundabout at the location without further delay.

Difficulties associated with the acquisition of the necessary land, which have held up the execution of the work have not yet been resolved. I understand that the council have arrangements in hands for the execution of interim works for the purpose of alleviating conditions at the junction pending the provision of the roundabout.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say by what amount the cost of the work has increased over the past ten years? I respectfully suggest that the cost has doubled and that this must be the only case in which a county council have failed to use the power available to them to remove a most dangerous corner.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the delay in providing improved lighting on Cromwellsfort Road, Walkinstown, Dublin; when improved lighting will be provided; the cost thereof; and the State grant thereto.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply of 17th November, 1966, to his previous question in the matter. I understand that negotiations referred to therein are still in progress. Pending completion of the negotiations it is not possible to say what the cost of the project will be. The normal rate of grant recoupment for proposals of this kind is 50 per cent of the capital cost.

With respect, Sir, I do not understand the relevance of this reply to Question No. 14. We were told that this would be done in the year 1966-67; the year has just finished now and surely if they are interested in fulfilling the statements made in this House, the work should be finished in a few weeks?

The Deputy knows that negotiations are going on between the county council and the ESB? Is that not so?

Any old excuse.
