asked the Minister for Education the number of rural national schools in County Westmeath likely to be affected by his Department's closure and transfer proposals.

49.

asked the Minister for Education the number of rural national schools in County Longford likely to be affected by his Department's closure and transfer proposals.

Mr. O'Malley

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 48 and 49 together.

It is only when the matter of replacing or reconstructing a small school arises or when some matter connected with future staffing falls to be considered that the question of amalgamating such a school with another school is dealt with. Then every case is examined on its merits.

Therefore, until all the cases in Counties Westmeath and Longford had been considered in detail in relation to one of the circumstances, which I have mentioned, the information sought by the Deputy could not be given.

There are 68 one and two-teacher schools in County Westmeath and 47 in County Longford.

Could the Minister indicate the number affected at the present time?

Mr. O'Malley

There are 20 small schools in County Westmeath and 25 small schools in County Longford being examined at the present time.

50.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present position in regard to new national schools proposed to be built in Westmeath during 1967.
